Do Scented Candles Pollute the Air Inside?

FavoriteLoadingAdd to favorites

My mother always told me not to burn candles because they use up all the oxygen in the indoor air, but I really love scented candles. Is there anything to her belief?

It would take a LOT of candles to use up all the oxygen in a typical room. Also, humans don’t need an optimal level of oxygen to survive, we don’t use very much of the oxygen in each breath.

Candles do emit some pollutants into the air, but one or two candles burned for a few hours a day aren’t typically a major health risk to most people.

Really, your biggest risk from candles isn’t so much the air pollution, which is minimal, it’s the risk of fire. So just be careful to not leave them lit and unattended around children or pets.

I dont know but they do sell organic candles at boutiques, candle shops, even places like Peir One. Might be a safer one to use.

Have you tried Scentsy candles? They are warmed and not burned. Therefore, they’re safe for the environment and also safe if you have any little fingers or whiskers in your home. :) The scents are wonderful and the warmers are beautiful!

Feel free to email me and I’d be happy to give you more info. I’m a consultant for Scentsy and love talking about them.

Candles use up a very small amount of oxygen and even having 1 or 2 house plants will cancel that out. Also, your house isn’t air-tight so there’s nothing to worry about there. Pollutants are negligible but if you’re worried about it try some naturally scented soy candles like the ones they have here:

Pollution from soot and smoke are very negligible. :- )
