When the lights go out in your home, what do you normally use, candles, oil lamps, or flashlights? Flashlights are great for the first few moments, but batteries are expensive and are unreliable when they have not been checked and replaced for a while. Candles or oil lamps will burn longer and are more economical if the lights go out during the night and you have to use them for hours.
The glass globes of oil lamps are usually very thin and when you burn oil in them, they will sometimes put out a heavy black smoke that will stink up the air and cover the glass as well. You must be very careful when using oil lamps because you could start a fire all too easily. Our generation is not accustomed to using them and might not know how to operate them as well as an older generation would have. Make sure the wick is not too long and do not overfill the lamp with oil. Never sit them where they can be easily knocked over and just the same as with space heaters, do not sit them too near anything flammable.
Candles are still probably the most popular choice for temporary lighting when the power is out. Candles that are in jars are likely the safest to use, but we will burn any candle when we are in the dark. You will also want to keep candles away from flammable objects too. If the wax can flow from the candle onto the surface you have it placed on, always use a plate or other type dish under it to keep the wax off of your furniture or from dripping onto the floor into carpet. Only light as many candles as you need to be able to see well until the lights are back on. The fewer that are lit, the less likelihood there will be for an accident.
If you like the smell of a candle or scented oil even when the lights are not out, then you should always be careful while they are lit. Keep them away from children and pets. Make sure you do not leave them unattended. Always make sure they are completely out before you leave a room especially if you are going to bed or leaving the house. Scented oils and candles can make the home smell great, but the last thing you need is to start a fire when they can so easily be avoided.
